Assembling 10GA Paper Shotgun Hulls

Save your spent 10 Gauge shotgun hulls with frayed or worn out plastic!

The brass base is what can last far beyond the plastic and indeed open the world of 19th century “black powder and paper hulls” that unlike costly all brass hulls they don’t need to be cleaned (keep using them

until they need to be replaced, just always SAVE THE BRASS BASE once a hull is used up!!) and

won’t make you hesitate to enjoy the hobby because you fear some $12 all brass hull might crack under

pressure, wear, and use - or get stepped on at the range.

Paper seals the gases better than rigid all brass hulls, which often allow gases to leak past them (as can

be seen on any all metal hull just fired with black powder).

Paper enables a better seal that adds oomph over all brass, eliminates the need to clean brass, won’t

have a “melting” event of plastic goo in the chamber, and is easily cut with a hobby knife trimmer

(look up “home made hull trimmers” online) and it smells good!

Have a spent 10 ga hull??? Be sure to deprime the spent hull before proceeding to the next step.

After you have removed the spent primer...use a candle or any small flame (even a heat gun) to

gently heat the brass base until the plastic hull loosens and can be removed with a steady pull

(use heavy leather gloves as the brass will be hot to the touch once the plastic hull begins to slide).

Be sure to use safety precautions: leather stove gloves, eye protection, and work in a very

well ventilated area.

Wipe off any soot built up from the previous steps. Roll crimp the end of the waxe paper hull tube

(this step will help to keep it structurally pressed into the brass later on and also to avoid the rim of

the brass digging into the hull paper, as it is a very tight fit!) Squeeze and press the waxed paper tube  into the brass until it is resting on the base as far in as it can go.

Next you will insert TWO of the punched waxed base wads.

One at a time & at a slight angle to ease them in.

One at a time place the two base wads into the paper tube at a slight angle. Using a ½ inch

dowel with a small hole at the end (hole should have a larger diameter than a 209 primer or just use a simple length of ½ inch water pipe) press each base wad down into the bottom of the hull until it firmly rests against the brass.  The two together will then equal slightly more than the height of a 209 primer.

Recommended but optional: gently heat the brass again to briefly melt the wax, bond the wads &

paper tube together creating a good seal (some old timers would add wax in the brass base before

reconstructing the hull so that later “candling” would seal the hull base against water completely).

At this point you will want to trim the paper hull to the correct length a sharp hobby blade stuck at a 15 degree angle in a wood dowel at the right length from the base of the hull and slowly turned does a very nice job of cleanly trimming the hull to the lengthyou desire.

Over all length will be determined by your shotguns specifications.

Be sure the brass is completely cooled and wiped clean of any soot before proceeding to the priming

stage.

Priming.....

Your brass is cool

The Paper Hull is trimmed to the desired length

You are now ready to insert the primer. With most shotgun shells the primer will easily press into place with a firm push down upon a hard level surface but if this is not the case you can use the same dowel or pipe that you used to press the

under powder base wads into the paper hull.

Be certain the object does not come into contact with your primer (dowel thus needs a centered hole larger than the primer!). You do not want to damage the primer.

You are now ready to re-load your paper hull with your favorite powder and projectiles.

Be sure to follow reliable loading data for black powder or data provided by your powder's manufacturer.

Be sure your shotgun is sound and safe to be used - have it inspected by a qualified gunsmith.

These paper hulls are recommended for use with black powder and

depending on the load, can sometimes survive multiple uses.

They are unlikely to survive full modern hunting loads (goose loads of steel & non-toxic shot) with smokeless powder more than once in a 3 1/2 inch magnum 10 gauge.  They are primarily aimed toward serving older/traditional shotguns.

Gently hand roll crimping the hull (using a hand drill or variable speed power drill) is recommended both at the base before assembly for structural support as well as on the finished load.

These hulls do not do well in a star crimp press!

You can make your own under powder wads by drilling 10 ga 1/8 inch nitro-cards, or you can buy

pre-drilled and waxed nitro cards from “Mrs. Parker” at 10 per dollar (they can be labor intensive to form!).

Virgin/untreated paper hull tubes are available at: $25 for 50, $50 for 120, $75 for 200 – they can soak in liquid silicone sealant for added structure and higher heat resistance (approximately 400°F), or if you prefer more traditional beeswax, tallow, etc…that is your choice.

If treating the hull is not for you, we offer waxed hulls (some may be slightly floral and/or spice scented to enhance the “paper & BP” experience) at: $35 for 50, $70 for 120, and $105 for 200.

Prices do NOT include shipping costs to your location and may vary (Canada may be higher than Texas,

for example).

We are only offering you paper products (nitro underpowder cards and hull forms), not ANY ammunition…nor will we be held liable for any misuse!  Use these paper products AT YOUR OWN RISK!  & please don’t ask for any ammo!!

We do not intend to offer silicone treated hulls at the current time due to their cost vrs. traditional wax hulls and labor in keeping the outside of the hulls slick enough for loading – but it is fairly easy to soak a hull in pure liquid silicone adhesive if you care to do so yourself.
